Mid Week @ Chadlington by Dave Freeman
By Jan Simmonds
Youthful side and great short overs cricket this week...
On Wednesday a very youthful side ( with the exception of the Chairman) travelled to Chadlington for a midweek 16 over game.
Chadlington elected to bat first and Charlie Gaskin reaped the reward for bowling at the stumps as their opener tried an audacious 'paddle' and he cleaned him up. Oscar Hlustik kept on probing away at the other end.
As we were trying to get everyone involved the two over spells were in order, Rory Hlustik came on to bowl and immediately struck when their most dangerous batsman Nick Leader managed to pick out Dave Freeman fielding at Square leg and he trudged off not knowing how incredibly unlucky he was to have picked out Tew's worst and immobile fielder. Rory finished with a wicket maiden which in the context of a 16 over thrash is a great feat. George Chipchase had the opportunity to bowl at his dad on the opposition but he gained no family 'bragging rights'
One other fielding highlight was Thomas Cunningham's catch at deep mid wicket which had a massive amount of 'hang time' only for it to be off a no ball!
A little bit loose in the middle overs meant that Chad reached a respectable 134.
Opening up Sam Barnes quickly reached 32 before retiring and Ben Sinton 18 got us off to steady start. Thomas Cunningham looked in good nick until falling to a excellent one handed catch, some lusty blows from Freeman and then Charlie Gaskin meant that we fell agonisingly 20 runs short which considering we conceded 40 extras means that if we bowled a bit tighter the game could have ended differently.
A game played in great spirit which serves as a good reminder that cricket played that way is a great way for our youngsters to hone their skills without the pressures of league cricket.
