Under 17’s off to a winning start
Finally, three months into the cricket season, the U17s are underway. For our first fixture we were away to Minster Lovell B.
The Tew XI were rather short of genuine U17s, with only U16s Joe Hirst, Jamie King and Jonty Renk available. The rest of the team was made up of the core of our successful U15s, plus Harvey Machin boldly stepping up from our U13s.
Minster won the toss and chose to bat. Openers Mersh and Wright both looked solid, but the run rate was well checked by excellent opening spells from Jamie King and Will Priscott, supported by some mostly good fielding. First change of bowling saw Jonty Renk and Sam Priscott tighten things even further, with Renk returning an excellent 0-10 off his four overs. Mersh was playing beautifully, but the Tew bowlers never let him get away. Special mention must go to young Tom Chesser who not only made a great run out for our only wicket, but bowled four great overs and held his nerve superbly as Mersh attacked; Tom’s final over only going for six singles, leaving Minster on 116-1 and Mersh unbeaten on 71.
In gloomy but muggy conditions Tew’s reply started positively, with regular U15 openers Cam Brown and James Babbage scoring briskly before falling for 19 and 14 respectively. Sam Priscott was unlucky to depart next – to an outstanding catch – soon followed by Joe Hirst. This brought captain Jamie King to the crease with the scoreboard reading 60-4 after 10 overs. When Will Priscott fell in the following over things were looking a bit shaky for Tew, but King found a solid partner in James Churchill, and together they set about their task. A very measured run chase by King, who managed the strike very well with his junior partner, was finished with a flourish in the final over. A six over the bowler’s head into the river then a four along the ground to the square leg boundary gave Tew the win with 4 balls to spare, King ending on 39 not out.
Well done to all the lads for a winning start.
