Winning the toss, Hook Norton elected to bat and made a strong start against some fairly lacklustre bowling from Tew. Attacking batting and the application of pressure by running quick singles led to fielding errors and two players reached 50 in quick time with a third ending on 45 not out. Dropped catches were the order of the day for both teams but conditions were difficult with a low, intense sun and rock-hard outfield. Hook Norton finished on a creditable 182 for 3 with the only wickets falling to Henry Simmonds (2) and Ollie Price (1).
In reply, Hook Norton were further energised by taking a wicket on the first ball of the innings but then Ollie Price took control of the game, batting aggressively but also with great intelligence and ended falling to the closest of run outs having scored an astonishing 130. None of our other players could get going unfortunately although Rich Churchill was starting to look in good shape when the innings came to end on 169 for 8.
Our predominantly young team really worked hard on a very hot evening but were undone by a stronger team on the night. What was really impressive was how supportive the team were to one another in the face of mounting pressure and missed chances and they are to be commended highly for their attitude.
Our thanks to Hook Norton who, at late notice, agreed to reversing the fixture.
Final words have to be towards Ollie whose magnificent innings drew a standing ovation from everyone at the ground!
