Bad day at the office :-(
By Jan Simmonds
Last minute heroics not enough to save the day sadly..
It was another bad day at the office for the 3rd XI. We lost the toss and were put into bat.
After a steady start, and looking secure for the first half hour, we lost regular wickets once opener Chris Hickman was given out to a dubious LBW decision.
As I went into bat as last man, the scoreboard was on a dismal 39. We had a decent last wicket partnership and got the final score to 74 with Jamie Coles finishing not out on 33. Sadly we were all out just before the 30 over mark.
Westbury went about getting the job done quickly and attacked our young bowlers with fierce shots from the start and it was not really a surprise that they reached their total without losing a wicket.
The most disappointing aspect from today was our poor fielding with people not quite focused on a sloping pitch and therefore not stopping balls we usually do. Sloppy fielding, including poor backing up and overthrows probably cost us 20 runs. This was emphasised at the end and hopefully will be another lesson learned by our young players as they continue their early development in adult league cricket.
Finally, a massive shout out to our wonderful chairman Dave Freeman who somehow magically managed to find us 10 players (late into Friday night); despite a whole host of members being unavailable because of the holiday season.
