3rd XI vs Challow & Childrey 2nd XI
Winning the toss we elected to bat and Tom White (28) and Jamie Shurmer (37) made an excellent platform for us. Alex Kelly then scored a flawless 71 supported by a typically exciting 24 from Andy Darby and from Ken Shurmer who ended on 19 not out. Setting 216 for 5 we hoped that keeping our bowling tidy would see us to victory. However, the opponents (who started the day three places above us in the league) had other ideas and despite not looking likely to chase down the total, certainly did not intend getting bowled out. Will Priscott (1 for 18 in 9 overs) and Owen Maginnis (only 18 runs conceded in 6 overs) got us off to an economical start but it was the later introduction of the spin twins, Henry Simmonds and Ken Shurmer, that really turned things in our favour. Henry earned the opponents’ admiration with 3 quick wickets (and two neat stumpings by Jamie Shurmer) for 24 runs and Ken was quite exceptional taking 3 for 6 off 4 overs! We couldn’t claim the 10th wicket but a winning draw has kept us in the mix at the top of the table.
